SORRENTO ITALY: GOES 3 D

SASL in Sorrento, Italy

Travel can be inovative if you try to LEARN something, Meet the locals, EXPERIENCE THE LOCAL LIFE

Speaking with Olga Stinga at SASL today I heard about a fantastic project her students are working on her studients are completing to add Sorrento to the 3D world on line

On Monday, February 11th, the project “Sorrento 3D” organized by Sant'Anna Institute-Sorrento Lingue, was presented during a dedicated press conference at Sorrento town hall.

The project is part of the academic programs such as the studies of art, archaeology, business, social and natural sciences that SA offers to American students from a variety of American Universities.

The creator and developer of the project is Jeff Johnston, an architecture professor from Alfred State College (New York, USA) who will count on the precious and efficient collaboration of his students, enrolled in a study abroad semester at Sant'Anna (January-May 2013).

The purpose of the project is to visualize Sorrento in 3D, through Google Earth (an app that can be easily downloaded for free from the internet), no matter where in the world you are.

Present at the press conference this morning were: Sorrento mayor, Avv. G. Cuomo; the Education Counsellor, Maria Teresa de Angelis; Sant'Anna Director, Cristiana Panicco; Alfred State College's professors, prof. J. Johnston and D. Tuzzolino, and all the students involved in the project.

Mayor Cuomo praised the constant effort of SA in organizing American programs in Sorrento, offering to young surrentine people the precious possibility of getting in touch with other professors, students and different educational  methods, directly in their home town, without being obliged to move overseas.

SASL Director Crisitana Panicco, thanked the mayor and the education counsellor for the townhall patronage and their appreciated support to the project. She also emphasized how similar academic programs contribute to the development of surrentine community  and promote intercultural exchange.

Dr. Panicco also reminded us that Sant’Anna’s mission is to provide a type of education that is not limited to a classroom. Sant’Anna Institutes believes in an education that provides practice and hand on experience that creates a bridge between cultures. This opens the door for more wonderful experiences and shares some of the great pleasures of staying in Italy.

Prof. Johnston mentioned the importance of the use of Google Earth-3D (and its apps) for the benefit of surrentine touristic businesses  and their visibility on the internet. This makes information and photos of sites and selected firms available to users all over the world.

His colleague, Prof. Dianne Tuzzolino, business professor at Alfred State College, went through the economic and marketing elements of the project, focusing on the benefits of publicizing a business on Google Earth.

Finally, Jordan Friedman, an architecture student at Alfred State College, showed how to realize a 3D building.

At the end of the press release, Mayor Cuomo and Dr Panicco have provided us with a deadline for the beginning of the project. By May, a presentation of the results of this innovative and exciting project are expected.
